PM eNewsletter The first Sunday of Advent

November 29th The first Sunday of Advent

Here we are again, Jesus, into Christmas.

Please Lord, let this truly be a holy period, for us to prepare,
to herald Your birth.

Let us not get so wrapped up into presents, that we forget to
give You, the present of our love.

Let us see that in this amazing birth our eternal life factor was
now in play.

You came to give us all eternal life and You came to make
reparation for all of the sins that was ever or will be committed.

Let us be set on fire with love for You and the love You showed us.

Let us see You in others and be Christ to them, so that someday
we all may shine in heaven with You.

Amen and Amen.

Thank you Lord, for loving us totally.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday PREGNANT AGAIN
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=11/29/2009

"In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just
Shoot." —Jeremiah 33:15

Happy new year! Today we celebrate the first day of the new
Church year and of Advent. Today, in a spiritual sense, we conceive
new life and prepare to give birth to that life in the Christmas
season. Advent is similar to pregnancy, in that we carry, protect,
and nurture Christ's new life within us. We must take care not to
do anything which might hurt the baby. Therefore, the Church
warns us: "Be on guard lest your spirits become bloated with
indulgence and drunkenness and worldly cares" (Lk 21:34). Just
as a mother's smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking drugs can have
bad effects on her baby, so our sinful preoccupation with "worldly
cares" can damage or even abort the new life of Advent.

We should begin this year and this spiritual pregnancy by going to
Confession. By repenting, we remove things which stifle the growth
of God's life within us. We should also simplify our lives, freeing up
more time to pray, read God's word, evangelize, and share
fellowship. We should be nourished and rested in our pregnancy.
TV, videos, and compulsive activities could very well smother our
new life in God. Advent, like pregnancy, is a wonderful time as long
as we carefully protect and nourish the new life within us.

Thankful to be Catholic

I am a Roman Catholic priest, a "cradle Catholic" who grew up
in an age of Catholic triumphalism. As children we were told to
play only with Catholics. Since Notre Dame football team won
almost all their games at that time, we believed that proved we
were better. As I grew older, got involved in a parish, and
eventually entered the seminary, I could see the Catholic
Church was definitely not perfect. But still I believed we were
the best. As I continued my studies for the priesthood and
was ordained, it was obvious the local Catholic church

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth
http://presentationministries.com/BST/bst2009-08.asp?navlink=latest

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official
teachings of the Roman Catholic Church

LOVE AND TRUTH

LIBERATION POWER

Truth preserves and expresses charity's power to liberate
in the ever-changing events of history. (5)

"A GREAT CHALLENGE"

Love in truth ... is a great challenge for the Church in a world
that is becoming progressively and pervasively globalized. The
risk for our time is that the de facto interdependence of people
and nations is not matched by ethical interaction of
consciences and minds that would give rise to truly human
development. Only in charity, illumined by the light of reason
and faith, is it possible to pursue development goals that
possess of more humane and humanizing value. (9)

"PRINCIPAL DRIVING FORCE"

Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by His
earthly life and especially by His death and resurrection, is the
principal driving force behind the authentic development of
every person and of all humanity. (1)

PRAY-DAY, PRAY-DAY - One Bread, One Body, 11/28/2009

PRAY-DAY, PRAY-DAY

"Pray constantly for the strength to escape whatever is in prospect, and
to stand secure before the Son of Man." —Luke 21:36

The Lord already has commanded us to pray always, but today may be a day
of more intense prayer. A tremendous spiritual war is raging. Some
Christians are winning this war by giving up their lives for the gospel.
Others are so defeated they don't even know a war is going on. Their
spirits have "become bloated with indulgence and drunkenness and worldly
cares" (Lk 21:34). Still others are neither winning nor losing; they are
in the middle of the fight of their lives, for their lives. Many of these
Christians are resisting sin to the point of shedding their blood (Heb
12:4). The Lord calls us to join them in the struggle by our prayers on
their behalf (Rm 15:30). Our brothers and sisters in the Lord are crying:
"Pray for us that the word of the Lord may make progress and be hailed by
many others, even as it has been by you. Pray that we may be delivered
from confused and evil men" (2 Thes 3:1-2). Therefore, "at every
opportunity pray in the Spirit, using prayers and petitions of every sort.
Pray constantly and attentively for all in the holy company" (Eph 6:18).

At the beginning of his papacy, Pope John Paul II exhorted us: "We feel
not only the need but even a categorical imperative for great, intense and
growing prayer by all the Church. Only prayer can prevent all these great
succeeding tasks and difficulties from becoming a source of crisis" (The
Redeemer of Man, 22, emphasis added).

On this last day in the Church's year, the Lord wants to complete His
works, transform His people, forgive our sins, restore broken
relationships, and more. For this to be done, there is "the necessity of
praying always and not losing heart" (Lk 18:1).

Prayer: Father, may this be a day of exceptional conversions and mighty
wonders.

Promise: "All dominions shall serve and obey Him." —Dn 7:27

Praise: Come, Lord Jesus! Maranatha!

LITTLE BIG HORN - One Bread, One Body, 11/27/2009

Friday, November 27, 2009

Daniel 7:2-14, Daniel 3:75-81, Luke 21:29-33
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/112709.shtml

LITTLE BIG HORN

"This horn had eyes like a man, and a mouth that spoke
arrogantly." —Daniel 7:8

In Daniel's vision, the horn that sprang from the fourth beast was the
Seleucid kingdom (Dn 7:8). The big mouth of the little horn was King
Antiochus Epiphanes. This man was so arrogant (see Dn 7:11) that, after a
reign of mass murder, terror, and torture (see 1 Mc 1:54-63), he remarked
about what a nice guy he was (1 Mc 6:12).

King Antiochus would feel at home with us today, for arrogance is rampant
in our society. It is not unusual for a minister or priest to flippantly
contradict the Bible and thousands of years of Spirit-filled people to
justify artificial contraception, homosexual activity, or abortion.
Professors, seminarians, and amateur theologians think nothing of ignoring
the Pope's teachings and dismissing him as a chauvinistic, authoritarian
relic. Too many Catholics turn up their noses at Jesus in Holy Communion.
They don't have time to receive the body and blood of Jesus, except maybe
on Sundays. Jesus doesn't fit into their weekday schedule. Are we mocking
God? (see Gal 6:7)

The Lord's judgment on our arrogance is: "All you can do is make arrogant
and pretentious claims. All such boasting is reprehensible" (Jas 4:16).
"The haughty eyes of man will be lowered, the arrogance of men will be
abased, and the Lord alone will be exalted, on that day. For the Lord of
hosts will have His day against all that is proud and arrogant, all that
is high, and it will be brought low" (Is 2:11-12). "God 'is stern with the
arrogant but to the humble He shows kindness' " (1 Pt 5:5; Prv 3:34).
Repent of arrogance and submit to God's word, His Church, and the pope.

Prayer: Father, may I shut my big mouth.

Promise: "The heavens and the earth will pass away, but My words will not
pass." —Lk 21:33

Praise: Once Paula got into reading the pope's teachings, she began to
really understand her faith.

David knew how to repent

Source: Michael Youssef

King David was a champion for God but he did not live a Teflon lifestyle.
The problems, difficulties, and sorrows of life did not slide past him. He
lived a difficult, tragic, and lonely life. His was a life of brokenness.
Great men and women of God are not great because they escape their problems.
They are great because they know how to go to God with their problems in
brokenness.

The Bible doesn't sanitize its characters before presenting them to us. They
are presented with all of their sin and uncertainty. This is why we are
given the brutal truth about David and his life - his sinfulness, his
blindness, and the consequences of his sin. Time and again, God forgave
David, but He didn't overrule the consequences of David's sin.

In many ways, the Bible's 66 chapters about David would make for a wild
Hollywood soap opera. Everything is there - murder, adultery, incest.
However, there is a difference between David's true-life drama in the Word
of God and a Hollywood soap opera. The Bible reveals to us the wages of sin
while Hollywood sanitizes, glamorizes, and sugarcoats the consequences of
sin.

Ignoring God's will may be accompanied by successes in the beginning but
give this behavior some time, and the wages of sin will become clear. As the
heart hardens, no sermon, no preacher, no friend, and no church will be able
to get through to that person until the Spirit of God breaks them.

David thought that he had gotten away with his sexual sin with Bathsheba. He
didn't understand that God's justice may take a long time but it will always
come. The law of God was clear and the punishment for adultery in the Old
Testament was stoning. Both the adulterer and the adulteress were to be
stoned to death. David tried to escape the law by arranging for Bathsheba's
husband, Uriah, to be killed.

Months passed and everyone forgot about the sin except for God. Through the
prophet Nathan, God brought David under conviction and his response was, "I
sinned before God." His response is an indication of the sorrow and grief he
had over his sin. Every verse of Psalm 51 shows us the depth of his anguish
and the reality of his repentance.

David's repentance is the only true and biblical kind of repentance. It was
genuine because it was accompanied by a desire to forsake his sin. The
consequence of his sin was grave - the death of his son. Still, God forgave
David just as He will forgive us when we come to Him in repentance.

From cover-to-cover, the Bible gives examples of great men and women of God
who exercised genuine repentance - in both word and in deed. Sin is
deceptive and its wages are death. God honors true repentance and gives life
to those who are broken before Him. Today you can ask the Lord to "Restore
unto me the joy my salvation" (Psalm 51:12).

EATING DISORDERS

"The king...refused to eat." —Daniel 6:19

On this Thanksgiving Day in the USA, a day of great feasting, the Church
reads to us about not eating. King Darius couldn't eat out of concern for
the doomed Daniel (Dn 6:19). The hungry lions couldn't eat, since God was
protecting Daniel (Dn 6:23).

This physical inability to eat has its counterpart in the spiritual life.
Spiritually anorexic people won't eat the spiritual food they need. They
have so stuffed themselves with the things of the world that they fail to
realize that their souls are starving to death for lack of nourishment
(see Prv 13:19).

To remedy our eating disorders, God gives us the Eucharist, Food from
heaven (Jn 6:31-32, 35). The word eucharist means "thanksgiving." In the
Eucharist, the Body of Christ, God connects giving thanks and eating. This
is why for centuries Christians have given thanks to God before meals.

Many of you are eating a big meal today. Hopefully, that meal will include
heartfelt public thanks to God for all His blessings. As good as such a
meal is, the ultimate Thanksgiving meal is the Mass, and the ultimate
"thanksgiving" meal is the Eucharist (see Jn 6:11). Food and thanksgiving
go together to such an extent that God combined them in the eucharistic
body of Jesus. Happy are they who eat thankfully at the banquet of the
Lamb (Rv 19:9).

Prayer: "I will give thanks to You, O Lord, with all my heart" (Ps 138:1)
by frequently receiving You at Mass (Ps 116:12-13).

Promise: "When these things begin to happen, stand erect and hold your
heads high, for your deliverance is near at hand." —Lk 21:28

Praise: Until he returned to the Church, Peter hadn't realized how
malnourished his soul had been.

"LAST SUPPER"

"King Belshazzar gave a great banquet." —Daniel 5:1

King Belshazzar gave a last supper for his friends (Dn 5:1). This banquet
featured revelry, blasphemy, idolatry (Dn 5:4), insolence, pride (Dn
5:20), terror (Dn 5:9), betrayal (Dn 5:30), and finally, the death of the
host (Dn 5:30).

King Jesus also gave a Last Supper for His friends (Lk 22:8ff). Like
Belshazzar's banquet, this Last Supper also featured betrayal (Lk 22:21)
and the death of the Host (Mt 26:31ff). However, Jesus' Last Supper
featured selfless love (Lk 22:15), humble service (Jn 13:4ff), the Bread
of Life, a new covenant in Jesus' blood (Lk 22:17-20), and praise of God
(Mt 26:30).

Many of you in the USA will take part in a "great banquet" tomorrow at
your Thanksgiving dinner. Like Belshazzar's last supper, some of these
banquets may feature drunkenness, betrayal, pride, and even blasphemy. You
may be ridiculed by members of your family (Lk 21:16), and even put "to
trial" in some family conversations (Lk 21:12). Jesus, the Lord of
banquets, says: "I bid you resolve not to worry about your defense
beforehand, for I will give you words and a wisdom which none of your
adversaries can take exception to or contradict" (Lk 21:14-15).

Prepare for tomorrow's banquet with today's Last Supper. Go to Mass today,
tomorrow, and every day if possible. Receive the Eucharist, a word meaning
"thanksgiving." Then your "Thanksgiving" dinner will be like Jesus' Last
Supper, not Belshazzar's.

Prayer: Father, may I be worthy of persecution for Your name.

Promise: "By patient endurance you will save your lives." —Lk 21:19

Praise: St. Catherine was put to death for her faith along with hundreds
of her converts.

Daniel 2:31-45, Daniel 3:57-61, Luke 21:5-11

THE LAST STAND

"The stone that struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the
whole earth." —Daniel 2:35

The writer of Daniel surveyed four hundred years of world history and saw
it as a series of breakdowns. Empire after empire, dynasty after dynasty
had collapsed. Jesus accurately prophesied a similar end for the great
Temple in Jerusalem. He claimed: "The day will come when not one stone
will be left on another, but it will all be torn down" (Lk 21:6).

Our world and our bodies deteriorate. Yet, "we do not lose heart, because
our inner being is renewed each day even though our body is being
destroyed at the same time" (2 Cor 4:16). "We do not fix our gaze on what
is seen but on what is unseen. What is seen is transitory; what is unseen
lasts forever. Indeed, we know that when the earthly tent in which we
dwell is destroyed we have a dwelling provided for us by God, a dwelling
in the heavens, not made by hands but to last forever" (2 Cor 4:18—5:1).

We look forward to the future. Every day we are being spiritually built
into "a holy temple in the Lord" (Eph 2:21), while world empires and other
temples, even our bodies, are being destroyed. Finally, the "edifice of
spirit" (1 Pt 2:5) that we are becoming will be completed. Then everything
else will fall apart, the world will end, and Jesus will return for "a
glorious church, holy and immaculate, without stain or wrinkle or anything
of that sort" (Eph 5:27). We will be the only thing left standing because
our Cornerstone and Foundation is the Rock Jesus (Ps 118:22; 1 Cor 3:11;
Dn 2:44-45).

Prayer: Father, enable me to stand erect, hold my head high, and praise
You when I see my world falling apart.

Promise: "The great God has revealed to the king what shall be in the
future; this is exactly what you dreamed, and its meaning is sure." —Dn
2:45

Praise: St. Andrew Dung-Lac would not renounce Jesus Christ. He and his
116 companions gave their lives as martyrs.

KOSHER - One Bread, One Body, 11/23/2009

Monday, November 23, 2009, Pope St. Clement, St. Columban, Bl. Miguel Pro

Daniel 1:1-6, 8-20, Daniel 3:52-56, Luke 21:1-4
Link to Readings --> http://www.usccb.org/nab/112309.shtml

KOSHER

"Please test your servants for ten days. Give us vegetables to eat and
water to drink. Then see how we look in comparison with the other young
men who eat from the royal table." —Daniel 1:12-13

The Jewish people believed that eating only kosher foods was an extremely
important part of their covenant with the Lord. This was so important that
many Jews died rather than eat unclean food (see 2 Mc 6-7). Consequently,
while in exile, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah insisted on a
vegetarian diet. This would assure them of eating kosher food.

In the new covenant, Jesus has made "all foods clean" (Mk 7:19). "Nothing
is to be rejected when it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made
holy by God's word and by prayer" (1 Tm 4:4-5). So we need not obey kosher
food laws. However, the new covenant does not abolish the commands of the
old, but fulfills them (Mt 5:17). In the new covenant, the emphasis is not
so much on the kinds of food we eat, but on the lordship of Jesus. Lord
Jesus will not only tell us what to eat, but how much, when, where, why,
and how to eat. Jesus may tell us to fast or eat with the poor (Lk 14:13).
He may command us to eat with family, not the TV; in thanksgiving, not
compulsion; at home, not the drive-through.

We want Jesus to be the Lord of our eating because by obeying His commands
we express our love for Him. Jesus said: "You will live in My love if you
keep My commandments" (Jn 15:10), including His commandments about eating.

Prayer: Father, may everything in my life be kosher with Jesus.

Promise: "They make contributions out of their surplus, but she from her
want has given what she could not afford — every penny she had to live
on." —Lk 21:4

Praise: Pope St. Clement started as a Jewish Roman and ended as a
Christian martyr.
