MARTYR

"You will be brought to trial before rulers and kings, to give witness
before them and before the Gentiles on My account." —Matthew 10:18

Jesus is the Truth (Jn 14:6), the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth.
He does not conceal from us the more difficult realities of following Him.
He bluntly states we are sent out "like sheep among wolves" (Mt 10:16).
The government will bring us to trial; the religious leaders will flog us;
even our families will turn us over to the police because of our Christian
witness (Mt 10: 17, 18, 21). We "will be hated by all" on account of Jesus
(Mt 10:22).

We are followers of Jesus, not because we don't know any better, but
because we love Him. Naturally, we don't want to suffer or be rejected.
Nonetheless, our love for Jesus is stronger than our love of self or our
fear of pain. We want to be with our Lord, even at the foot of the cross.
We prefer to die with Jesus rather than live without Him. We love Him "for
better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health."

Even death will never separate us from Him, for love is stronger than
death (Rm 8:35, 38-39; Sg 8:6). Jesus, the Bridegroom, I love You; I live
for You.

Prayer: Jesus, if it be Your will, may I die a martyr's death for love of
You.

Promise: "As soon as he saw him, he flung himself on his neck and wept a
long time in his arms." —Gn 46:29

Praise: As he grew older, poorer, and sicker, Andrew's faith grew stronger
and deeper.

(Is your parish Spirit-filled? If not, there is still time to register for
our retreat, "How to Renew Your Parish", July 20-22. Pope John Paul II

the true meaning of the parish" ("Lay Members of God's Faithful People",

Two things, two things only

Weekly Feature

Source: Francis Frangipane
There are so many things to occupy our minds: so many books, so many
examples, so many good teachings that deserve our attention, that say, "here
is a truth." But, as I have been serving the Lord these past years, He has
led me to seek for two things and two things only: to know the heart of God
in Christ and to know my own heart in Christ's light.

Knowing the Heart of God
I have been seeking God, searching to know Him and the depth of His love
toward His people. I want to know Christ's heart and the compassion's that
motivate Him. The Scriptures are plain: Jesus loved people. Mark's gospel
tells us that after He taught and healed the multitudes, they became hungry.
In His compassion, Christ saw them as "sheep without a shepherd" (Mark
6:34). It was not enough for Him to heal and teach them; He personally cared
for each of them. Their physical well-being, even concerning food, was
important to Him.

A lad with five loaves and two fish provided enough for Jesus to work
another miracle, but this miracle had to come through Christ's willing but
bone-weary body. Consider: Christ brought His disciples out to rest; "For
there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to
eat" (Mark 6:31).

Consider: Jesus personally had come to pray and be strengthened. For John
the Baptist, Jesus' forerunner, had been beheaded earlier that very week at
the hands of Herod. It was in the state of being emotionally and physically
depleted that Jesus fed the multitudes-not just once or twice but over and
over again "He kept giving [the bread and the fish] to the disciples to set
before them" (Mark 6:41).

Thousands of men, women and children all "ate and were satisfied" (v. 42)!
Oh, the heart of Jesus! The miracle was for them, but we read of no miracle
sustaining Him except the marvellous wonder of a holy love that continually
lifted His tired hands with more bread and more fish. Out of increasing
weakness He repeatedly gave that others might be renewed.

So, if my quest is to know Him, I must recognise this about Him: Jesus loves
people-all people, especially those society ignores. Therefore, I must know
exactly how far He would travel for men, for that is the same distance He
would journey again through me. Indeed, I must know His thoughts concerning
illness, poverty and human suffering. As His servant, I am useless to Him
unless I know these things. If I would actually do His will, I must truly
know His heart. Therefore, in all my study and times of prayer I am seeking
more than just knowledge; I am searching for the heart of God.

Knowing Our Hearts
At the same time, as I draw closer to the heart of God, the very fire of His
presence begins a deep purging work within me. In the vastness of His
riches, my poverty appears. The psalmist wrote, "Who may ascend into the
hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place? He who has clean
hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has
not sworn deceitfully" (Psalm 24:3-4).

We cannot even find the hill of the Lord, much less ascend it, if there is
deceit in our heart. How does one serve in God's holy place if his soul is
unclean? It is only the pure in heart who perceive God. To ascend toward God
is to walk into a furnace of truth where falsehood is extracted from our
souls. To abide in the holy place we must dwell in honesty, even when a lie
might seem to save us. Each ascending step upon the hill of God is a
thrusting of our souls into greater transparency, a more perfect view into
the motives of our hearts.
It is this upward call of God which we pursue. Yet, the soul within us is
hidden, crouching in fears and darkness, living in a world of untruths and
illusions. This is our inner man, the soul God seeks to save. Have you
discovered your true self, the inner person whom truth alone can free? Yes,
we seek holiness, but true holiness arises from here; it comes as the Spirit
of Truth unveils the hidden places in our hearts. Indeed, it is truthfulness
which leads to holiness.

God, grant us a zeal for truth that we may stand in Your holy place!

Men everywhere presume they know the "truth" but have neither holiness nor
power in their lives. Truth must become more than historical doctrines; it
must be more than a museum of religious artefacts-mementoes from when God
once moved. Truth is knowing God's heart as it was revealed in Christ, and
it is knowing our own hearts in the light of God's grace.

As members of the human race, we are shrouded in ignorance. Barely do we
know our world around us; even less do we know the nature of our own souls.
Without realising it, as we search for God's heart, we are also searching
for our own. For it is only in finding Him that we discover ourselves, for
we are "in Him."

Yet, throughout that searching process, as I position my heart before the
Lord, it is with a sense of trembling that I pray the prayer of King David,
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts;
and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting
way"(Psalm 139:23-24).

Let us wash the cosmetics from our souls and look at the unadorned condition
of our hearts. I know God has created us eternally complete and perfect in
Christ. I believe that. But in the first three chapters of John's
Revelation, Jesus did not tell the churches they were "perfect in His eyes."
No! He revealed to them their true conditions; He told them their sins.
Without compromise, He placed on them the demand to be over-comers, each in
their own unique and difficult circumstances.

Like them, we must know our need. And like them, the souls we want saved
dwell here, in a world system structured by lies, illusions and rampant
corruption. Our old natures are like well-worn shoes into which we relax; we
can be in the flesh instantly without even realizing it. The enemies that
defeat us are hidden and latent within us! Thus, the Holy Spirit must expose
our foes before we can conquer them!

Concerning man's nature, the prophet Jeremiah wrote, "The heart is more
deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?"
(Jeremiah 17:9). Quoting another of David's prayers, a similar cry is heard,
"Who can discern his errors? Acquit me of hidden faults. Also keep back Thy
servant from presumptuous sins; let them not rule over me; then I shall be
blameless, and I shall be acquitted of great transgression" (Psalm.
19:12-13).

There may be errors inside of us that are actually ruling us without our
awareness. Do we realise, for instance, how many of our actions are
manipulated purely by vanity and the desire to be seen or accepted by
others? Are we aware of the fears and apprehensions that unconsciously
influence so many of our decisions? We may have serious flaws inside yet
still be either too proud or too insecure to admit we need help.

Concerning ourselves, we think so highly of what we know so little!

Even outwardly, though we know our camera pose, do we know how we appear
when we are laughing or crying, eating or sleeping, talking or angry? The
fact is, most of us are ignorant of how we appear outwardly to others; much
less do we know ourselves inwardly before God! Our fallen thinking processes
automatically justify our actions and rationalise our thoughts. Without the
Holy Spirit, we are nearly defenceless against our own innate tendencies
toward self-deception.

Therefore, if we would be holy, we must first renounce falsehood. In the
light of God' grace, having been justified by faith and washed in the
sacrificial blood of Jesus, we need not pretend to be righteous. We need
only to become truthful.

No condemnation awaits our honesty of heart-no punishment. We have only to
repent and confess our sins to have them forgiven and cleansed; if we will
love the truth, we shall be delivered from sin and self-deception. Indeed,
we need to know two things and two things only: the heart of God in Christ
and our own hearts in Christ's light.

OUR FATHER

"Have you a father?" —Genesis 44:19

Joseph had everything. He was talented, handsome, and rich. He was one of
the most important people in the world. However, all this meant almost
nothing to him. Joseph was heartbroken, not so much because of being
rejected by his brothers, but from being separated for twenty-five years
from his father. Joseph expressed his longing for his father with loud
sobs (Gn 45:2). As soon as Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers,
he first of all asked them: "Is my father still in good health?" (Gn 45:3)

We all were conceived with Joseph's problem. We were separated from our
heavenly Father. No matter what we had, bought, possessed, or did, we
could never be happy. Everything was ruined and life was empty without our
Father. Then Jesus saved us. He is the only way to the Father (Jn 14:6)
and "the exact Representation of the Father's being" (Heb 1:3). If we see
Jesus, we see the Father (Jn 14:9). Jesus and the Father are One (Jn
10:30). Jesus taught us to pray to "our Father" (Mt 6:9) and reconciled us
to our Father. As the Father loves Jesus, Jesus loves us (Jn 15:9).

Prayer: Abba...

Promise: "The gift you have received, give as a gift." —Mt 10:8

Praise: St. Augustine Zhao Rong could have had a longer, seemingly more
prosperous life, but chose to die for his faith in Jesus, to live forever
with his Father.

FEEDER SYSTEM

"It was Joseph…who dispensed the rations to all the people." —Genesis
42:6

Eleven of the twelve children of Jacob were caught up in a famine. They
could get no food where they lived, so they went to Egypt, where Joseph,
their erstwhile brother, gave them their rations of grain (Gn 42:6), and
more besides (Mt 6:33).

In today's Gospel, Jesus chose twelve new men, His apostles (Mt 10:2). He
commissioned them, and us, to be new Josephs, to be absorbed in
distributing the word of the Lord in times of famine and in times of
plenty. The children of the new covenant are to be distributors of food
like Joseph, who fed the whole world.

From this point on in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus will be teaching and feeding
His apostles. After building them up, He will send them out to feed His
people with His word (Jn 21:15-17). The apostles then feed others, who in
turn grow strong enough to feed still others. God intends that this feeder
system perpetuate itself so His word continues to spread (see Acts 6:7).

We are to be the Master's good stewards, occupied with distributing
physical and spiritual food (Mt 24:45). Like the apostles, we have been
fed by the Master on a steady diet of word and Eucharist. Thus built up,
we are able to feed His sheep (Jn 21:16) and keep them alive and thriving
in times of famine (Ps 33:19).

Amos prophesied that there would be a famine not for food, but for hearing
the word of the Lord (Am 8:11). Therefore, distribute God's word, teaching
in-season and out-of-season (2 Tm 4:2).

Prayer: "May Your kindness, O Lord, be upon us who have put our hope in
You" (Ps 33:22).

Promise: "The reign of God is at hand!" —Mt 10:7

Praise: Maureen made a habit of sending money anonymously to fellow
parishioners in need.

TONGUE-TIED

"Some people brought Him a mute who was possessed by a demon." —Matthew
9:32

In Matthew's Gospel, we go with Jesus on a miracle and healing tour (Mt 8
and 9). Matthew saves the best till last when Jesus looses the tongue of a
mute by expelling a demon (Mt 9:33). Three chapters later, Matthew
recounts the healing and deliverance of another mute (Mt 12:22).

The deliverance of the mute is very important to Matthew because he knows
that all of us are tongue-tied by the devil in some way. We may not be
able to spontaneously pray, enthusiastically praise, or boldly evangelize.
We are like Zechariah during the nine months John was in the womb (Lk
1:20). The devil's got our tongues. If he controls our tongues, he
controls our entire bodies (Jas 3:2).

The Holy Spirit is poured out to free our tongues so we can pray and
praise both in our native language and in foreign tongues (Acts 2:4).
Either the Spirit looses our tongues and the devil is tied, or our tongues
are tied and the devil set free. Our sword against the evil one is the
Spirit using our tongues to wield the prophetic word of God (Eph 6:17).
Let's unsheath our tongues and attack the gates of hell (Mt 16:18).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, use my tongue for warfare against Satan.

Promise: "Jacob said, 'I will not let you go until you bless me.' " —Gn
32:27

Praise: After twenty-plus years of marriage, Marty still leads his family
in song and prayer.

"FUNERAL-HOME FAITH" - One Bread, One Body, 7/6/2009

Monday, July 6, 2009, St. Maria Goretti

Genesis 28:10-22, Psalm 91:1-4, 14-15, Matthew 9:18-26

"FUNERAL-HOME FAITH"

"Jesus turned around and saw her and said, 'Courage, daughter! Your faith
has restored you to health.' That very moment the woman got
well." —Matthew 9:22

The Lord wants to inspire us to greater faith through the example of the
synagogue leader and the hemorrhaging woman. The synagogue leader showed
great faith in Jesus. His daughter was dead, so he did not ask Jesus to
heal her but to raise her from the dead (Mt 9:18). Before Jesus raised the
girl from the dead, a woman hemorrhaging for twelve years expressed her
faith in Jesus by touching the tassel of His cloak. By her faith, she was
healed (Mt 9:22).

Do you believe Jesus can and does raise the dead — not just at the end of
the world but right now? Do you believe Jesus will heal you of a malady
you've had for years, even twelve years or more? Do you believe the Lord
will heal immediately? Do you believe signs and wonders you did not
believe last year? Are you growing in faith, breaking new ground, and
moving mountains? (Mt 17:20)

Our faith in Jesus is not fully developed. We have light-years of growth
in faith remaining even after having already grown light-years. "Faith
comes through hearing, and hearing from the word of God" (Rm 10:17, our
transl). Welcome His word (Jas 1:21). Hear the Lord (see Mt 17:5). Grow in
faith.

Prayer: Father, increase my faith daily (Lk 17:5).

Promise: "In you and your descendants all the nations of the earth shall
find blessing. Know that I am with you; I will protect you wherever you
go, and bring you back to this land. I will never leave you until I have
done what I promised you." —Gn 28:14-15

Praise: Alexander Serenelli, St. Maria Goretti's murderer, attended her
canonization and there gave his life completely to Jesus.

One Bread, One Body

This weeks readings and reflections

Sunday "ENOUGH" (Lk 22:38)
http://presentationministries.com/obob/obob.asp?d=7/5/2009

"My grace is enough for you." —2 Corinthians 12:9

Alleluia! Today is Resurrection day, the weekly celebration of
that first Easter morning when Jesus rose from the tomb,
triumphed over sin and death, and made all things new for us.
Today is a day of unity, when believers from all over this
earth gather to worship almighty God, listen to His living,
all-powerful word, and receive the Bread of Life, Jesus Himself.
Today we learn again that God loves us so much that He can
never give us enough of His blessings. Alleluia!

How wonderful is God's plan for this day! How can it be that
people will walk away from God's house today saying disgustedly,
"I've had enough of this church," rather than, "Your grace is
enough for me"? The difference is revealed in today's psalm
response. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus as Lord (Ps 123:2;
Heb 12:2) in a spirit of humility, then we are opened to His
mercy and grace. When we focus on anything else, then God is not
enough to satisfy us; instead, He is "too much" for us (Mk 6:3)
and we turn elsewhere for satisfaction.

Today, as you observe the Lord's day in all its splendor,
"examine yourselves" (2 Cor 13:5). "What are you looking for?"
(Jn 1:38) "Are the consolations of God not enough for you?" (Jb 15:11)

PM Internet Prayer Requests
http://www.presentationministries.com/prayer/prayer.asp

During the third hour, I pray… Sacred Heart of Mary intercede
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to look down upon all our priests
and give them strength profess the teaching of Your Church.
Also for Deacons Sisters and Nuns. For the souls of the
separated brethren. That the Blessed Mother Mary will intercede
to the Sacred Heart of Jesus to pour out his blood on all which
are on the verge of committing a mortal sin and they would see
the love and mercy of our Lord. For missionaries and monasteries
throughout the world. For the Sisters and Nuns that pray for us.
During this July 4th weekend all Americans remember the Freedoms
this country was founded on and our soldiers have died
protecting which includes the Freedom of Religion. God Bless
America! For the Presentation Ministries.
(K., Texas, 7/4/2009 3:17:23 PM)

Pray for my Priest and for me to be able to speak to him and for
us to make great progress in our meeting. Give us both the
strength we need and enable me to help him and be a true friend
to him that he can talk to when he needs someone, not just the
other way around. Give me courage to confess fully and ask for
forgiveness for my sins.

Peaceful death for my mother-in-law who is in the hospital dying

(Anonymous, 7/3/2009 9:55:40 PM)

Please pray for me because my ultrasound result states that I
have a high probability of a blighted ovum. I am advised for
another ultasound on July 17. Please for me and my husband.
God's will be done. Thank you and God bless you all.
(E.L., Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental, Philippines, 7/3/2009

I'm American, but live in the UK. I moved here 5 years ago with
a controlling husband. I am in a very bad situation where my
children (one of whom is American only and not British) have
been placed into Foster Care. I have a real chance of winning
them back in our November 2nd hearing, and right now I need
prayers that the Lord will grant Katelyn the ability to speak
from her heart that she wants to be returned to her mother and
that the court will hear her. I am so sorry and I know I am a
good mother. I just desperately want my children back. Please
pray for me and my daughters. Thank you.

Pope Benedict XVI, Shepherd of Truth

Notable quotations from Pope Benedict XVI and official teachings
of the Roman Catholic Church

NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES

"FUNDAMENTAL SHIFTS"
The new digital technologies are ... bringing about fundamental
shifts in patterns of communication and human relationships.

"AT HOME IN A DIGITAL WORLD"
These changes are particularly evident among those young people
who have grown up with the new technologies and are at home in
a digital world ...

"TRULY A GIFT"
These technologies are truly a gift to humanity and we must
endeavor to ensure that the benefits they offer are put at the
service of all human individual and communities, especially
those who are most disadvantaged and vulnerable.

"ENOUGH" (Lk 22:38)

"My grace is enough for you." —2 Corinthians 12:9

Alleluia! Today is Resurrection day, the weekly celebration of that first
Easter morning when Jesus rose from the tomb, triumphed over sin and
death, and made all things new for us. Today is a day of unity, when
believers from all over this earth gather to worship almighty God, listen
to His living, all-powerful word, and receive the Bread of Life, Jesus
Himself. Today we learn again that God loves us so much that He can never
give us enough of His blessings. Alleluia!

How wonderful is God's plan for this day! How can it be that people will
walk away from God's house today saying disgustedly, "I've had enough of
this church," rather than, "Your grace is enough for me"? The difference
is revealed in today's psalm response. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus as
Lord (Ps 123:2; Heb 12:2) in a spirit of humility, then we are opened to
His mercy and grace. When we focus on anything else, then God is not
enough to satisfy us; instead, He is "too much" for us (Mk 6:3) and we
turn elsewhere for satisfaction.

Today, as you observe the Lord's day in all its splendor, "examine
yourselves" (2 Cor 13:5). "What are you looking for?" (Jn 1:38) "Are the
consolations of God not enough for you?" (Jb 15:11)

Prayer: Father, You bless us with more than enough good things (Lv 25:21).
Thank You, my Lord, my God, my All.

Promise: "Therefore I am content with weakness, with mistreatment, with
distress, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ; for
when I am powerless, it is then that I am strong." —2 Cor 12:10

Praise: Praise the risen Jesus, Whose love will never end! Alleluia!

A FAST BUCK - One Bread, One Body, 7/4/2009

Genesis 27:1-5, 15-29, Psalm 135:1-6, Matthew 9:14-17

A FAST BUCK

"Then they will fast." —Matthew 9:15

Jesus' disciples did not fast, while the Pharisees and John's disciples
did fast (Mt 9:14). Jesus explained that His disciples would fast later
after they had received a new life in the Spirit. This was necessary
because fasting in Jesus' name is so powerful it would be incompatible
with the old lifestyle. For example, Jesus' kind of fasting is sometimes
very extreme. Jesus fasted for forty days and nights (Mt 4:2). This was
much longer than the Israelites' annual fast on the Day of Atonement and
even the two fast days per week of the Pharisees.

Without the new life in the Spirit, we won't have the discernment,
strength, and purity of motivation which is important for an extensive
fast. Jesus' kind of fasting was also different from Old Testament fasting
because it was an action more than a reaction. Old Testament fasting was
usually a reaction to sin and its disastrous results. However, Jesus used
fasting to inaugurate His public ministry and the Church's first
missionary journey.

Without a life of ministry and mission, we don't have a wineskin that can
hold Jesus' way of fasting. If we have trouble fasting or don't see its
value, most likely we must first change the old wineskin of our lifestyle.

Prayer: Father, lead me to drastically change my lifestyle. May I then
experience a great need to fast.

Promise: "Let peoples serve you, and nations pay you homage." —Gn 27:29

Praise: St. Elizabeth's patience with her husband's unfaithfulness
eventually led him to Christ.
